Patrick Mahomes injury update issued by Kansas City Chiefs after knee surgery with timeline set for his NFL return

A PATRICK Mahomes injury update has been issued by the Kansas City Chiefs.  The 30-year-old quarterback is set for an extended period out after suffering a knee injury on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes has now undergone successful surgery on his knee.  League sources have told ESPN that a tear on the quarterback’s left ACL was repaired on Monday night in Dallas, Texas.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Dan Cooper.  Cooper is the Dallas Cowboys‘ head team physician.  It has also been reported that he repaired Mahomes’ torn LCL in his left knee.

Quarterback Mahomes’ season is officially over with three games remaining for the Chiefs.  The Chiefs have stated that he “will begin his rehab process immediately.”  Mahomes’ Chiefs went on to suffer a 16-13 loss to the Chargers.

Two third quarter field goals sealed the game for the visitors.  The star quarterback is expected to miss around nine months of action following his surgery.  This will rule Mahomes out of the Chiefs’ offseason program with questions hanging over his start to the 2026 season.

He will face a race against time to be ready in time for the 2026 NFL season opener on Thursday, September 10.  Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, 67, remains optimistic that Mahomes can make a successful return following his rehab.

Gardner Minshew, 29, is currently the only dedicated quarterback on the Chiefs’ roster.  Chris Oladokun, 28, is expected to be called up from the team’s practice squad.

Mahomes has missed just five regular season games since being named as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018.  The Chiefs are now out of playoff contention after winning just six of their 14 games so far this season.  They will travel to face the 2-12 Tennessee Titans without their talismanic quarterback on Sunday.
