Patrick Mahomes Sends Strong Message to Chiefs GM Amid Wild AFC WR Trades

Two of the Kansas City Chiefs’ competitors in the AFC became much tougher on offense in Week 7 after trading for wide receivers.  The Buffalo Bills added Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. The Las Vegas Raiders sent Davante Adams to the New York Jets.  Head coach Andy Reid speculated on Monday the Chiefs could execute a trade before the deadline on Nov. 5 after losing their top pass catchers Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown. But Kansas City sat silent on Tuesday as the Bills and Jets made two of the biggest deals of the year.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t panicking about the roster days before the Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of February’s Super Bowl.  Via Adam Teicher of ESPN, Mahomes said Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has a great track record of doing what he needs to for Kansas City to make late postseason runs.

“I have extreme confidence with the guys that are on that football field,” Mahomes said. “They’ve won games, they’ve won Super Bowls, they’ve made plays in big moments and Brett Veach has done a great job of bringing players in that can step up whenever their number is called.  “Every time I step on that football field, I feel like we have the best ability to win, and I think that’s a credit to Brett Veach and coach (Andy) Reid bringing in guys that really get after it and put in the work to be great every single day.”

The Chiefs have managed to start the season 5-0 after losing their expected WR1, Brown, to a shoulder injury in the preseason. Kansas City pulled off two victories before their bye in Week 6 after Rice sustained a knee injury that required surgery.  JuJu Smith-Schuster had a monster performance in the Chiefs 26-13 win against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5, catching seven passes for 130 yards.  Tight end Travis Kelce is the team’s second-leading receiver (behind Rice) with 228 yards but has no touchdowns this season.
