Patrick Mahomes clashes with Danny McBride and their unique voices make this look like something out of a script

Patrick Mahomes entered the offseason under a cloud of disappointment after the Kansas City Chiefs fell short in the Super Bowl, a game that could have cemented their legacy with a third straight title and fourth in six years. The loss snapped a dominant run led by the players who have turned the Chiefs into a powerhouse in this successful era – Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, Harrison Butker and Andy Reid. Before Mahomes took over, Kansas City had a dismal 9-18 playoff record with just one postseason win in 24 years. Now, they have a 26-22 record, five Super Bowl appearances in six seasons (an NFL record), and 16 playoff wins since 2018 – another league high. But the sting of that loss has brought out the comedians. Mahomes’ raspy voice, long mocked as Kermit the Frog’s twin, has now drawn new comparisons, this time to Danny McBride’s brash character Kenny Powers from Eastbound & Down. The ribbing has only sharpened the spotlight on the quarterback.
Mahomes Viral Voice Mashup Takes Off
The buzz reached new heights when Mahomes appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after leading the Chiefs past the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. During the chat, he talked about the team’s wild victory party in Las Vegas. Someone clever turned the moment into a viral video, splicing Mahomes’ words with Kenny Powers’ swaggering delivery. The clip exploded online, racking up more than 12 million views. Fast forward to a recent Tuesday night, when Danny McBride, the man behind Powers, sat down with Kimmel. The host couldn’t resist. “There’s a clip I want to ask you about,” Kimmel said with a grin. “It involves our show and it involves you, and it’s become huge online.
Do you know Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback?” McBride nodded. “Of course I do, yeah.” Kimmel pressed: “And you’ve heard the comparisons people make to you?” McBride smiled. “I’ve seen that,” he said, before adding, “I think the first time I saw my son really respect me was when he saw that clip.” Kimmel floated the idea that Mahomes might enjoy the nod. McBride’s response? “Well, you know, champions recognize champions.” The exchange was gold-two legends, real and fictional, clashing in the funniest way.

The best part for me is when McBride says, “Well, you know, champions recognize champions. Last offseason, Mahomes’ voice also made headlines when a fan in Raiders camp introduced a Kermit the Frog puppet dressed as Mahomes. The playful prank was widely shared, and even rookie safety Trey Taylor joined in, imitating Mahomes’ voice for comic effect. Both Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid were quick to handle the situation with humor, cementing their status as not only football legends, but good sports who know how to take a joke.

Offseason Reload and Redemption Ahead
As the NFL Draft approaches, the Chiefs are gearing up for a resurgence. Travis Kelce’s decision to return for another year is a huge boost, and the offense looks downright scary. Rookie Xavier Worthy, who made history as the first first-year player with multiple touchdown catches in a Super Bowl, torched defenses with an 8-catch, 157-yard, 2-TD performance in Super Bowl 59. Pair him with Rashee Rice, and if Hollywood Brown-sidelined most of last year-returns, Mahomes will have weapons galore. Kelce, who will likely draw less coverage, only adds to the chaos opponents will face. Coming off a season in which Mahomes posted his lowest stats yet, this could be the setup for a monster comeback.
The Chiefs have been to the AFC Championship seven years in a row (a record) and have hosted five in a row. Big things are expected – again. Mahomes is shrugging it off. With a 17-4 playoff record, seven straight conference title games and a knack for rewriting history, he’s got bigger things to focus on – like getting back to the top.
