Patrick Mahomes’ father gets emotional when his son unexpectedly ‘gets’ his mother back

Patrick Mahomes has proven to be a star player on the field for the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as a role model off it.  With wife Brittany, the couple are parents to three children – Sterling, Bronze and Golden – and Patrick has done his best to be an example for them in everything he does.

During a recent episode of the series called Heart of a Kingdom – a campaign that focuses on the impact of black women in the life of the Chiefs – Mahomes paid tribute to the black woman who has been an inspiration to him: his grandmother.

“The black woman in my life that will always be an inspiration to me is my grandma, Cindy Mahomes,” said Patrick.  “She told me to never back down, no matter what the situation was or is. She never backs down, and she was someone that was gonna do whatever it took to make sure her family was getting treated the right way.”

Mahomes doesn’t speak of his grandmother often

The moment was all the more touching given Mahomes doesn’t talk about his grandmother in public.  As a result his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr, couldn’t help but get emotional with what his son had to say.

“Love every word son. You know she’s pround,” he commented on the post.  No doubt Patrick inherited some of his grandmother’s fighting spirit, as a tragic accident when Mahomes’ dad was just seven took away her ability to move from the neck down.

Nevertheless, she persevered and continued to fight – even learning how to be left-handed when she lost the mobility in her right hand. She passed away in 2021 at the age of 68, but Mahomes’ kind words about her show much of an impact she made on his life.  “Hopefully, I could have that same competitive spirit and loyalty as I continue to grow older and get off that football field as well. That’s how I’ll forever honor her legacy and grandma. I hope I made you proud,” said Mahomes.
