The Mahomes family was expected to be preparing for another championship run with the Super Bowl LXVIII approaching, but just a week before the biggest game of the year, Pat Mahomes Sr. found himself in jail instead of the stands. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. Headlines criticised him. And the past came knocking.  However, this? Nobody anticipated this narrative twist. The man who once made headlines for all the wrong reasons is now receiving a different type of attention, fourteen months later. Trisha Mahomes, his wife, is making sure that everyone is aware of it.

Pat Mahomes Sr. proves that although the path to redemption is not simple, it is worthwhile. Andra Day’s “Rise Up” is a song that perfectly captures this moment. Trisha Mahomes, his wife, didn’t choose it at random; rather, she turned it into the theme music for a significant event. “14 Months Strong 💪. I’m so proud of you! ❤️ @silky_p,” she shared on Instagram. Letting everyone know that this wasn’t simply a fight, but a victory, achieved together. Pat Sr. acknowledged it and replied on the story, “Thanks babe.” And to further commemorate the milestone, she posted a photo of Pat Sr. wearing all-black athletic wear, a ThePro cap, and striking neon orange sneakers. The imagery was strong: a man standing tall, steady, and reclaiming control of his narrative.

Pat Mahomes Sr. was earlier married to Randi Mahomes (Patrick’s mom), but they divorced in 2006. In the year 2021, Pat Sr. made the decision to take another chance on love and wed Trisha Mahomes. Although there aren’t many facts available about their love story, it’s obvious that Trisha’s fierce loyalty has kept him together. She is a Clinical Research Coordinator from Tyler, Texas, according to her LinkedIn profile. Her social media accounts? More tightly locked down than the red-zone Chiefs’ defense. She enjoys nature, gardening, reading, and, of course, football. The Kansas City Chiefs are boldly represented in her Threads bio because, let’s face it, it’s impossible not to be a fan if your stepson is Patrick Mahomes.

Despite all Pat Sr. has thrown at her, she has never abandoned him. “I would like to thank God, my wife, family, and friends for six months on the sunny side of the road. I know it’s been hard getting to know sober Pat, but it’s well worth it. Trisha Mahomes, thank you for being my rock and supporting me every step of the way,” he posted on his IG after reaching six months of sobriety. And when August 2024 finally arrived, Trisha celebrated his 54th birthday with a double celebration post: “Happy 54! More importantly, Happy 6 months!!! Love you!” She’s not just his wife—she’s his anchor.

However, things weren’t quite picture-perfect prior to the celebrations and emotional posts. The path to sobriety was a struggle rather than a choice. A year ago, Pat Sr.’s life was a never-ending cycle of court appearances, disputes, and missed opportunities for second chances. Rock bottom was a reality he was living in, not just a passing event.

Pat Mahomes Sr: From Super Bowl chaos to sobriety

Pat Mahomes Sr. had to overcome many obstacles to reach this point. The headlines were different just 14 months ago. He was caught driving while intoxicated (3rd or more) in Tyler, Texas, on February 3, 2024, only eight days before Super Bowl LVIII. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. The family name was suddenly back in the news as his son, Patrick Mahomes, was getting ready for the most important game of his career.  It wasn’t the first time. Multiple past DWI accusations, including convictions in 2012, 2018, and 2019, are on the record. For prior offenses, he even spent 40 days in jail over the weekends. But the stakes were bigger this time. He might have been fined $10,000 and imprisoned for up to 10 years.

He was present at Allegiant Stadium to watch Patrick lead the Chiefs to victory in spite of the arrest. Ever the professional, his son dismissed enquiries about the controversy with the succinct and restrained remark, “It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family.” No distractions. No unnecessary drama. He just focused on the game. “You always have nerves going into the Super Bowl,” he admitted. “You have to embrace those nerves.”

However, Pat Mahomes Sr.’s DWI arrest was just the latest in a string of distractions. His younger son, Jackson Mahomes, has had his own legal troubles and repeatedly making headlines for his questionable antics, from throwing water on Ravens fans to an ill-advised TikTok dance on a memorial for slain Washington safety Sean Taylor. Even Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, has been a social media lightning rod. From spraying champagne on freezing fans in 2022 to her outspoken presence online, she’s had her share of viral moments.

However, Pat Mahomes Sr. decided to change when the Super Bowl confetti settled. He admitted the struggle at six months sober. Now, at 14 months, Trisha’s proud post proves that the work is paying off. Sobriety isn’t just about quitting alcohol—it’s about regaining trust, rebuilding relationships, and proving that change is real. And so far, Pat Sr. is doing just that.  For now, though, Trisha Mahomes’ message is clear. Her husband isn’t just surviving—he’s rising up. And for a family that has seen its fair share of challenges, that’s a victory worth celebrating.
