Aaron Rodgers’s parents blamed his then girlfriend Olivia Munn for their son cutting off contact with them for nine years, a new biography about the football superstar reveals. Ed and Darla Rodgers felt that the actress was the ‘chief culprit’ behind their family discord which began in 2014 when she began dating their second son, according to ‘Out of the Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers’, by sports journalist Ian O’Connor.

Darla, a devout Christian, was mortified that Munn, now 44, was having sex with Rodgers, 40, before marriage. And she was even more aghast when Munn revealed in interviews about how they didn’t do it on game days.  O’Connor writes: ‘Given her devout religious views, Aaron’s mother disapproved of premarital sex and was opposed to her middle child sharing a hotel room with his girlfriend even as an NFL player.  ‘Darla did not appreciate how Munn joked about oral sex in an interview or how she publicly talked about her sex life with Aaron just before that loss at Buffalo.’

The interview in question appeared to be Munn talking on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ in December 2014 where host Andy Cohen asked her if she had sex with the then Green Bay Packers quarterback on game days.  She replied: ‘No, we don’t. Not on game days. There’s not a rule, but it just doesn’t happen because there are other things to focus on.’

However, Munn said they occasionally have sex after Packers games.  ‘It depends on how late the game is…I try to have sex as much as I can.’ she said.   According to a source, Munn was ‘saying all that s*** and it pissed off Darla, really pissed her off.’  Ed and Darla objected to another interview that Munn did with Cohen in which she claimed that she had tried to encourage him to patch things up with his parents.  Ed said: ‘It’s a lie.’

Tensions escalated further when Munn – who Aaron broke things off with in 2017 – got into an ‘angry rant’ with his parents about how they couldn’t see Rodgers after a game in Tampa.  game while on a trip to Disney World that year, but Munn ‘made clear she did not want [Rodgers’ parents] meeting them or attending the game,’ O’Connor writes. According to the book: ‘Ed and Darla explained that they had been attending Aaron’s games since he was a kid and did not need her permission to continue to do so.’

At the time, Ed told Munn: ‘You haven’t been on the scene very long. You’re just his girlfriend. We’re his parents.’  His parents hoped to get a phone call from Rodgers apologizing for Munn’s comments but they never did.  They went to Tampa anyway and were met with an email he sent to family members that effectively said: ‘Don’t attack the woman I love.’

O’Connor, a New York Post sports journalist, writes that Ed and Darla had been ‘sent to the Island,’ and wouldn’t speak to their son for another nine years.  Yet O’Connor writes that Munn ‘did not help her own cause’, with one incident in particular leading to divisions between her and Rodgers’ parents.  Munn ‘insulted’ them when she sent back Christmas presents that Ed and Darla bought her and their son, O’Connor explains.

In a deeply unfortunate coincidence, they turned up at the home on Ed’s birthday which led him to mistakenly believe Rodgers had sent him a birthday present – until he opened it.  One possible reason for Rodgers breaking things off with his parents that O’Connor floats is that he felt his generosity towards them was being ‘taken for granted.’ Munn ‘agreed’ with that sentiment and felt that he shouldn’t let his family ‘do any fame and fortune chasing through him’.

Rodgers, who now plays for the New York Jets, seemed to buy into it because his own mother was ‘strong and unyielding’ and Munn was a ‘presence in her own right.’  Yet over time, Ed and Darla concluded that Munn was the ‘chief culprit in the family division.’

Rodgers never accepted this and says in the book that she had ‘nothing to do’ with the deep tension with his parents. He told O’Connor: ‘I have questions about why they feel the need to talk about it, because it’s like a game of poker. ‘When you are holding all the cards, you don’t have to bluff. There’s nothing they can say other than make up stories but look at the facts.’

In 2020, three years after they broke up, Munn sparked speculation that she was trashing Rodgers’s sexual prowess during an interview in which she suggested she faked orgasms with one of her ex-boyfriends, who she didn’t identify.  Munn said: ‘Swear to God I’m like I regret every time I have fake moaned because these guys are out there feeling so f**king confident.  ‘I have this one, in particular, that was just the worst, the worst at just having sex.  ‘In fact, he went down on me twice during the years we were together and I asked him once and said: ‘Why don’t you ever go down, but by the way, I don’t want you to’,’ Munn said.

Rodgers’s parents hoped their middle child would have married his ex-fiancée Destiny Newton, but he broke things off with her in 2013, O’Neil says.  One of the NFL great’s friends said: ‘We all loved her. We knew Destiny. She would have kept the crew tighter,’ according to O’Connor. The friend said all of the blame shouldn’t fall on Munn’s shoulders for the Rodgers family rift.  The quarterback had exiled friends as well as his family, and once did a ‘clean sweep’ of people close to him, the friend said.

Rodgers changed agents too and ‘never needed much help in determining when to end a relationship’, O’Connor writes.  A family friend said: ‘You get on his bad side, you cross him once, you are dead to him.’  Others thought that Munn had ‘opened Rodgers’s eyes’ to the fact that some people were taking advantage of him.  During one interview Rodgers said she gave him ‘stability off the field’ which meant ‘so much’ to him.

Munn, who starred in HBO’s The Newsroom and The Daily Show, this year married comedian John Mulaney, 41, with whom she has a son, Malcolm, two.  In 2023 it was reported that Rodgers is in a ‘casual’ relationship with model Mallory Edens – the daughter of Milwaukee Bucks and Aston Villa owner Wes Edens.
