Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was recently joined by WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes on her podcast “Unapologetically Angel.”  While Swoopes and Reese were discussing the current state of the WNBA, Reese asked Swoopes a question that would certainly raise eyebrows.

She asked Swoopes if she would be inclined to coach in the WNBA and potentially coach the Sky.  “Would you be our coach?” Reese asked.  Swoopes then responded with a definite “yes,” while mentioning that she would “love” the opportunity to work with Reese and Chicago Sky star Chennedy Carter.  Reese then looked at the camera and said, “That’d be great, I’d love that too. So, Chicago Sky.”

Sheryl Swoopes

Swoopes has extensive experience as a player in the WNBA. She’s an icon in the league, finishing her career as a four-time champion, three-time MVP, and six-time All-Star. During her career in the WNBA from 1997-2011, Swoopes played for the Houston Comets, Seattle Storm and Tulsa Shock.

As a coach, Swoopes spent time at the collegiate level with Texas Tech, Mercer Island and Loyola-Chicago.  While the Sky have an established head coach in Teresa Weatherspoon, Swoopes may be able to join the coaching staff if all parties meet an agreement.

Reese and Swoopes didn’t speak on any specifics, whether she would come into a head coaching gig or some type of player development role, but both sides seemed interested in working with one another.  Weatherspoon coached in her first season with the Sky in 2024 and led Chicago to a 13-27 record, ending the year as the No. 10 team in the WNBA standings.
