WNBA star Angel Reese has been announced as part of the Met Gala Host Committee.

The Chicago Sky forward has shot to superstardom since winning the NCAA championship with the LSU Tigers in April 2023. Reese was the seventh overall draft pick last year, making the WNBA All-Star team and setting a single-season rebounds record.

Nicknamed ‘Bayou Barbie’, the 22-year-old has also made waves off the basketball court. In January, Reese was on the cover of Vogue and has taken another step into the fashion world by becoming the first WNBA player to join the Met Gala committee.

The Met Gala is an annual star-studded event that raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. After her involvement was announced, Reese posted a simple five-word message: “2025 Met Gala Host Committee.”

US sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and seven-time Olympic gold medal gymnast Simone Biles will join the basketball star on the panel. NBA legend LeBron James has been named honorary chair, and Formula One icon Lewis Hamilton will be one of four co-chairs.

A solo ticket for the prestigious fashion event reportedly costs $75,000, with the price for a table reaching $275,000. In 2024, the Met Gala raised a remarkable $26million and Reese will hope to break that funding record during her time on this year’s panel.

“It’s always been both: basketball and fashion,” Reese told Vogue last month. “But I was a fashion girlie from young too. I was always in my mom’s closet, putting on her stuff. I liked to carry a purse. Hair done. I wanted to look put together. I still do.”

Reese has attended several fashion events in the WNBA off-season, including the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. However, her attention has turned back to the sport for the inaugural Unrivaled season. The 3v3 basketball league boasts an average salary of $220,000 for the eight-week season, the highest among women’s sports leagues.

Reese is part of Rose BC, who are bottom of the standings with a 2-4 record. The 22-year-old was forced to cheer on her team from the sidelines after being ejected in the second quarter of their recent win over Vinyl BC.
