Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky are welcoming two new faces to the roster for the second half of the 2024 WNBA season.  The Sky acquired Rachel Banham, Moriah Jefferson, a 2025 first-round pick, and the right to a 2026 first-round pick swap from the Connecticut Sun for Maria Mabrey and a 2025 second-round pick just before the league-mandated break.

Reese recently spoke on those additions, sharing some conversations she’s had with these WNBA veterans.   The first-year star mentioned Banham and Jefferson have both explained that she’s gotten “lucky” with the treatment she’s receiving as a rookie since they didn’t have that privilege a couple of years ago.

“I’m excited for both of them,” Reese said. “They give me a lot of insight of things that they had. Not just on the court but off the court. They tell me about different programs that they’ve been in. How rookies have been treated, and they always ask me, ‘How are you being treated?’ and they said I got lucky because I luckily have great vets here.”

Banham was drafted with the No. 4 pick in the 2016 WNBA draft, while Jefferson was taken at No. 2 in the 2016 draft.  Reese seemed appreciative of their insight since both players have been at the WNBA level for quite some time.  Whether it’s a new wave in the WNBA or simply Reese’s teammates, the rookie has been vocal about veteran players welcoming her with open arms during her first professional season.

Part of this treatment could stem from Reese’s influence — she has millions of followers on social media — but another aspect can be the 22-year-old’s elite-level play.  Angel Reese has averaged 13.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game this season. She joined Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark as the only rookies to make the WNBA All-Star team, so it’s clear that she’s not just a star in her draft class.

Reese has developed into one of the biggest stars in the league, and she’ll look to continue her reign in the WNBA when the season resumes.  Chicago will return to the court on Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. ET after the WNBA’s break for the Paris Olympics.
