King Charles welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron for his state visit to the UK on Tuesday, and he was not quite looking like himself, which did not go unnoticed.  Accompanied by Queen Camilla and First Lady Brigitte Macron, Charles commenced the three-day journey that will highlight a millennium of “shared history and culture” between the UK and France.

The British monarch, who continues to feud with his youngest son, was seen greeting President Macron, with his eye visibly bloodshot.  A Buckingham Palace spokesperson reassured the public that there is no cause for concern, attributing the redness to a burst blood vessel in his right eye that developed overnight.  They also clarified that it is not connected to the King’s cancer treatment.

The state visit will be filled with traditional ceremonies, including a formal reception at the Royal Dais in Datchet Road, Windsor, and a Royal salute from Home Park and the Tower of London.  King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Waleses, and the Macrons are set to partake in a carriage procession through Berkshire and along the Long Walk leading to the castle.

A ceremonial welcome awaits in the castle’s quadrangle, where Camilla, William, Kate, and the First Lady will observe as the King and President review the Guard of Honour.  Following the inspection, a luncheon will take place in the State Dining Room. Post-lunch, the president and his wife, alongside the King, Queen, and other royals, will peruse a curated exhibition of French-related items from the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room.

Mr. and Mrs. Macron will also journey to London on Tuesday afternoon to visit the Grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey, tour the Palace of Westminster where the French leader will address parliamentarians in the Royal Gallery, and meet with opposition leaders at Lancaster House.  This evening, a dazzling state banquet will be hosted by the King at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall, where both Charles and Macron will deliver speeches to the invited guests.

It is yet to be confirmed by Kensington Palace whether or not the princess will attend the banquet.  On Wednesday, President Macron and Mrs. Macron will join Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Lady Starmer for lunch at Downing Street, ahead of a UK-France summit at Number 10 on Thursday.
