Cameron Norrie was taken aback when a journalist unexpectedly inquired about his romantic status with Emma Raducanu. At the age of 29, Norrie became Great Britain’s last hope in the Wimbledon men’s singles after advancing to the round of 16 by defeating Mattia Bellucci in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-3.

Following Jack Draper’s surprising elimination at the hands of Marin Cilic, Norrie stands as the sole British contender in the men’s singles bracket. Anticipating queries on the burden of carrying British hopes at SW19 or his prospects of clinching Grand Slam glory in his post-match press conference, he encountered an entirely different line of questioning.  A reporter shockingly quizzed him on rumours about whether he is dating fellow Brit Raducanu. The question evidently caught Norrie off guard.

Commencing with congratulations on Norrie’s recent victory, the journalist – noting the public’s interest not just in tennis but also in players’ personal lives – then pressed Norrie for confirmation of a relationship with Raducanu.   He said: “Apart from everyone here loving tennis, some of the gossip has been about who Emma Raducanu is dating. Can I ask if you’re dating her? Can we get to the bottom of this, please?”.

Caught somewhat hunched over at his desk, Norrie swiftly sat upright, eyes widening, as he processed the unexpected question, prompting him to seek clarification with a brief: “Sorry?”, reports the Mirror.  The reporter pressed again: “We’re trying to find out who is dating Emma Raducanu. It seems to be going round all the men’s singles. I was just wondering if you are dating her, please?”.  Looking perplexed, Norrie responded: “I’m not, no. You can ask her, though. You can ask her. I don’t know,” before quickly turning away.

Raducanu’s Wimbledon journey was abruptly ended Friday night as she succumbed to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.  Lately, there’s been ample buzz regarding Raducanu’s personal life off-court with several romance speculations linking her to none other than Carlos Alcaraz, who holds the Wimbledon men’s singles title.  Nevertheless, Raducanu has quashed such whispers of a budding romance by describing their relationship as purely platonic. Discussing her mixed doubles partner at the upcoming US Open, she remarked: “I’ve known him for years.

“Wimbledon 2021 was the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021.”  She added, “We have a good relationship still. He’s obviously overtaken me a lot, but it’s nice that we have that from a while ago. I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young.  “When you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you’re like, ‘That’s a real genuine connection.’  “Because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you’ve known for a long time mean a lot more to you.”
