Angel Reese may have come into the WNBA as a star on and off the court, but Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon made the rookie earn her way into a significant role on both ends of the floor.  However, she was quickly stamped as one of Chicago’s best defenders, with her scoring and rebounding skills developing throughout the 2024 WNBA season.

Reese has recorded seven straight double-doubles, which is the most by any rookie in WNBA history. Consistency is one of the biggest challenges for a rookie but the LSU product has been the most consistent in her rookie class, posting solid numbers night after night.

Weatherspoon spoke on Reese’s rookie season following an 83-72 victory against the Dallas Wings on Thursday.  “She’s just out there to win. She’s not out there to break records. She’s out there to win, just competing every night and playing hard. It’s paying off for her and it’s paying out for us. We’re super proud of her. There’s some greater things to come,” said Weatherspoon via Chicago Sky PR.

Reese has explained that falling to No. 7 in the 2024 WNBA draft was a “blessing in disguise”. The rookie believes she fits like a glove with Weatherspoon and the first-year head coach thinks it’s only the beginning for the rookie.

Weatherspoon wanted fans and the media to know Reese wasn’t here to chase personal goals or individual awards. The Sky forward may be the first rookie to have seven straight double-doubles, but for Reese and Weatherspoon, there’s one goal in mind: winning.   “She’s not here to break records,” said Weatherspoon.
