Emma Raducanu beamed and laughed in an England shirt as she arrived for training ahead of Wimbledon on Sunday morning.  The tennis star showed off her ball-catching ability at the All England Club in SW19, perhaps in an audition to be Jordan Pickford’s long-term successor.

Raducanu turned up clutching a personalised Dior bag bearing her first name and decked out in a full England kit with shirt and shorts.  That tote bag costs to the tune of £2,400 and is based around the Zodiac signs, with astrology being important to designer Christian Dior himself.  Victory, however, would be priceless for both England this summer and Raducanu, who has been handed a stern first-round test in the women’s singles in the form of 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

She missed last year’s Wimbledon as she underwent rehabilitation from surgeries to both wrists and an ankle.  Now Raducanu is back and hoping to better what marked an impressive debut at the grass-court tournament in 2021, when she reached the fourth round as a wildcard entry, which she is again this year.

Her bag’s official name is the Medium Dior Book Tote from the Niki De Saint Phalle Capsule, which ‘weaves mystical elements into its creations’.

Niki De Saint Phalle was a French-American artist, to whom the range pays tribute.  During catching practice the tennis star also wore Air Pods to get herself in the zone.  England will be requiring that same calm when they contest their Euro 2024 last-16 clash with Slovakia.  Though they have never lost to the central European nation in six encounters, winning five, Gareth Southgate’s men know they are a potential banana skin.

Switzerland took full advantage of an ailing Italy side to win 2-0 on Saturday and the Swiss would be England’s quarter-final opponents if the Three Lions advance.  Meanwhile, while Denmark lost 2-0 to Germany, they could have have dumped out the hosts and thought they were in the lead in the second half until Joachim Andersen’s goal was ruled out
