Jalen Hurts’ Has a College Fund for His Little Sister—Meet His Family

To some, Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts might just be the guy standing between the Kansas City Chiefs and history—if the Chiefs win, they’ll become the first team in NFL history to win 3 Super Bowls in a row—but Hurts is a pretty good QB in his own right. He might not have Patrick Mahomes’ 3 Super Bowl Rings, but Hurts has played in a Super Bowl before, and lost, to these very same Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s probably why, for the Eagles, Super Bowl LIX feels like a chance at redemption as much as a chance to deny Kansas City. No one wants to see another team cement a dynasty by beating you twice, after all. And when Jalen Hurts steps onto the field for the biggest game of the season, he will have his family supporting him

Hurts, who recently got engaged to his long-time girlfriend Bryonna “Bry” Rivera Burrows, has a pretty tight-knit family But what does the Eagles QB’s family look like? Who are Jalen Hurts’ parents? Who are his siblings? Here’s what we know.

Who are Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts’ parents are Averion Hurts Sr. and Pamela Hurts. The two have three children together, with Jalen Hurts being the middle child. Averion Hurts Sr. is the head football coach at Channelview High School near Houston, where he coached his son Jalen. “I always talk about how impactful it was on my life, being a coach’s kid,” Hurts told GQ Sports in 2021. “Football is something that’s deeply rooted in my family.”

A couple of years ago, in the press conference ahead of Super Bowl LVII, Hurts spoke about his parents. “I have a foundation kind of set for myself, but my parents did that for me,” he said, “I think being a coach’s kid, they created habits for me to see things a certain way, have the wisdom that I have, and I give all the credit to them.”

His father has also discussed seeing his son grow up into a successful QB. “It’s a blessing to watch a young man that developed a passion for a sport and really, really worked hard at every level and every turn,” Averion Sr. told the NFL’s Good Morning Football. “It’s just something he was obsessed with and it’s really remarkable to see the journey and to be a part of it … It’s humbling as a parent and as a coach.”

Hurts’ mother Pamela, meanwhile, is a school counselor who also works as a Math Special Education Teacher at Anthony Aguirre Junior High School in the Channelview Independent School District. Hurts has hailed his mother as an inspiration for him off the field. “My mom, she raised me with high character and to do things the right way,” Hurts told ESPN in 2021. “She’s a counselor back home, and that’s a perfect platform to impact the people around you, to impact kids around you.”

Who are Jalen Hurts’ siblings?

Hurts has two siblings, Averion Jr., and Kynnedy, and is really close to both of them. Averion Jr. posted a tribute to his brother that read on Instagram that read, “I am so very grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside you. Plenty of memories were made and even more love was exchanged. I got your back just like your shadow does.” Averion Jr. played football and was a QB at Texas Southern University’s Tigers in Houston, Texas. He is currently a coach at Baytown High School in Texas. His younger brother, Jalen, spoke to GQ about their great relationship, saying, “I wouldn’t be where I’m at today, just watch him play as a younger brother, taking me a long way.”

The Eagles QB’s sister is much more private, though she is also an athlete and played volleyball for Channelview High School. Hurts shared with GQ in 2021 that he set aside $70,000 for her college tuition. “I haven’t really talked about this one to anybody yet, not even my parents or my sister even. Just in case she needs it in the future, she’s 16 now and she’s going to go to college one day, she’s going to do great things,” Hurts said. “Just in case she needs it I have $70,000 set aside for her to go to college.”

“She’s the smartest one of the three of us,” he told Sports Illustrated in 2022. “And I watch her put in an endless amount of work.”
