When Patrick Mahomes won his first Super Bowl five years ago he had plenty of help on the other side of the ball. One of those players has now decided to call it a career.  On Tuesday, longtime NFL cornerback Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement after 12 seasons. His career included three Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro selections, All-Decade honors and a Super Bowl ring from Super Bowl LIV.

Many fans have already offered their well-wishes to Mathieu as he moves on with his career. But Mahomes also decided to show his respects.  Taking to X, Mahomes congratulated him on his career. He called Mathieu “one of the best” in NFL history.  “Congrats to my Man! @Mathieu_Era one of the best to ever do it!” Mahomes wrote.

Mathieu may have a somewhat hard case to make to the Hall of Fame voting committee. Despite being one of the most feared tacklers and playmakers in the league, the numbers don’t do him a ton of favors.  Being a fan favorite can only get you so far.  Mathieu was a superstar at LSU in the early-2010s, earning All-American honors and SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. He went to the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft and was a Pro Bowler for them by 2015.

In 2019, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs and became a three-year starter for them, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors twice while joining the team on two Super Bowl runs. He was a part of the team’s Super Bowl LIV win in 2020.   Will Canton come calling for Mathieu?
