Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently addressed the controversy surrounding accusations of unfair officiating during the Chiefs’ game against the Houston Texans. The debate arose after Mahomes drew two roughing-the-passer penalties, sparking widespread discussion about the calls. The first penalty occurred in the opening quarter when Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. hit Mahomes after he had released a pass. The second incident took place in the third quarter when Mahomes slid late and was hit by Folorunso Fatukasi and Henry To’oTo’o.

In an interview with 96.5, Mahomes shared his perspective on the situation, emphasizing his faith in the officials’ intentions. “I’ve learned that no matter what happens during the game, something is going to come out about if you win, if you continue to win,” he said. He also made it clear that he doesn’t dwell on such controversies, adding, “I don’t really pay attention to it.”

CHIEFS REF

Mahomes acknowledged that officiating can be a double-edged sword, admitting that he has experienced both favorable and unfavorable calls during his career. However, he expressed confidence in the referees’ commitment to ensuring the game’s outcome is determined by the players on the field rather than by penalties. “They’re trying their best to make the right calls,” Mahomes noted, reiterating his belief in the integrity of the officiating process.

Mahomes responds to criticism over ‘flopping’ incident

Addressing a specific moment from the game, Mahomes responded to criticism for allegedly “flopping” when he slowed down before being pushed out of bounds by a Texans defender. He admitted, “I probably shouldn’t have done that,” but explained that his intention was to avoid taking an unnecessary hit. His candid acknowledgment displayed his willingness to reflect on his actions while maintaining his focus on player safety.

Mahomes also highlighted that despite the penalties in question, the Texans had ample opportunities to secure a win. He pointed to missed kicks and issues with their offensive line as critical factors that impacted their performance. While some have focused on the officiating, Mahomes made it clear that the game’s outcome ultimately depended on execution from both teams.

As the Chiefs prepare for their next matchup against the Buffalo Bills, Mahomes remains confident in his team’s abilities and continues to approach controversies with a calm and measured perspective.
