DeVonta Smith speaks

Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith cleared up any questions or concerns about his status for Christmas Day’s game against the New York Giants.  “You know me,” Smith said. “I’ll be good, I’ll be out there.”

Smith injured his knee on the first drive of the game in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but played through the injury, finishing the contest with five receptions for 50 yards. Since then, he missed two practices this week ahead of Monday’s game, instead getting treatment on what was described as a bone bruise.  He returned for Saturday’s practice and afterwards spoke about the injury and his status for Monday.

“If I can walk, I can play,” Smith said via Olivia Reiner of The Philadelphia Inquirer.  Smith found a lot of success against the Giants last season, as did the Eagles. In the two regular season matchups, he caught 12 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown in two wins.  In the Divisional Round of the 2022 playoffs, Philadelphia and New York faced off at Lincoln Financial Field, and Smith was the Eagles’ leading receiver in a 38-7 drubbing of the Giants. He caught six passes for 61 yards and a touchdown in the playoff win.

Philadelphia is in the midst of a three-game losing streak and hopes to snap it against New York on Christmas Day at 4:30 p.m. As 13.5 point favorites at home, if the Eagles can’t find a way to win against the Giants, it may be time for fans to start looking towards the 2024 season.
