REVEALED: Why Jalen Hurts suffered ‘disconnect’ with Eagles HC Nick Sirianni last season as pair look to fix relationship
After the Eagles started 10-1 last season, it looked like a return to the Super Bowl was likely. Then everything fell apart and Philadelphia did not even win a playoff game. The team’s head coach, Nick Sirianni, and star quarterback, Jalen Hurts, were not on the same page, and have to find a better way forward in year No 4 together.
According to The Athletic, there was a ‘disconnect’ between the two last season that has not been fixed. The Eagles are expected to again be competitive in the NFC this season, two seasons removed from a 3-point loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. It is clear Philadelphia is moving forward with both Hurts and Sirianni, so fences will have to be mended.
Sirianni became the Eagles head coach before the 2021 season, while Hurts was drafted by the team in 2020. Last April, Hurts received a 5-year contract extension for $255million, with $180million guaranteed. ‘We’ve seen Jalen Hurts on the sideline with Nick Sirianni, and they were not going at one another. But there is definitely a difference in personality,’ per the Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
‘The way I would describe it: The relationship is still a work in progress. Last year there was some disconnect between them, due to their personalities,’ Russini continued. ‘Nick, we’ve seen, is a very emotional guy. Jalen is a very private guy.’ ‘They are different human beings, which is fine. You don’t all have to be the same, but you do have to be on the same page when it comes to what you want to do on offense,’ Russini concluded. The hangover from last year’s late-season collapse will be on everyone’s mind until Hurts, Sirianni, and the rest of the Eagles can prove the overwhelming losses are a thing of the past.
