Stephen A. Smith, 57, reveals surprising reason he’s never married

ESPN broadcaster and possible 2028 Presidential hopeful Stephen A. Smith has revealed the surprising reasons he has never been married, stating that he would not have been faithful. Smith does not talk about his personal life in public often, but decided an appearance on rapper Cam’ron’s ‘Talk With Flee’ podcast was the right time to comment on his lack of nuptials.
Smith has long been known as a bombastic sports reporter and is one of the most recognizable on-air personalities on any network. His notoriety has only gained momentum in 2025, as a shock new betting market listed him as the fourth favorite to become the 2028 Democratic nominee, ahead of Kamala Harris, Andy Beshear, and fellow outsider Mark Cuban.
Only one American leader, the 15th President James Buchanan, was never married before entering the Oval Office and leaving it. That was nearly 200 years ago. Smith blamed his busy schedule for why he has never tied the knot, despite plenty of other celebrities and ESPN talent finding ways to do so.
‘I know that it’s hard, I know that it’s worn on some people as well. It is the reason why I’ve never been married, because I was on the road 200 days out of the year and the fact of the matter is at that time it was no way in hell I was going to be faithful,’ Smith said. ‘I knew that, so why the hell am I going to sit up there and violate my marital vows knowing ahead of time I ain’t going to honor them?’
With his marriage stance, Smith invokes a controversial period in United States history involving former President Bill Clinton, who was involved in a cheating scandal with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky during his time in the Oval Office. The only three people with better odds in the poll to be the 2028 Democratic nominee are Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, and Wes Moore – the Governors of California, Pennsylvania, and Maryland respectively.
The ESPN personality previously talked up his chances of running for the White House in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com at the Super Bowl, and rumors have continued to swirl in the weeks since. As of Sunday morning, a $100 bet on Stephen. A to win the race would win you $1,241, and his odds of winning the nomination are now reportedly 7.26%.
Speaking to DailyMail.com in New Orleans about his chances, Smith said: ‘Assuming that I’m well off, that I have lots of money, and money is no longer a concern, if the American people came to me and looked at me and said “Yo, man, we want you to run for office”, and I had a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States, I’m not gonna lie. I’ll think about that. ‘But I gotta have my money. I’m not gonna go to the White House broke. I’m not gonna do that. I gotta have my money. I gotta have my home. I gotta have my financial situation completely taken care of. I have no concerns if that happens for me.
