Teresa Weatherspoon sends a message about Angel Reese’s numbers after another defeat
Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon has attempted to ease some of the pressure being put on Angel Reese this season by reminding everyone that the youngster is not here to set records immediately. Reese arrived in the WNBA off the back of an incredible NCAA season with the LSU Tigers, and the fanfare that came with that has resulted in a huge amount of pressure on her to perform from the outset at the top level.
A loss against the New York Liberty has further highlighted some of the shortcomings in the Sky squad, and Reese finished the loss with 10 points and 10 rebounds; which ended up being just barely enough to extend her historic double-double streak. The coach only removed Reese from the match when she got her double-double, which led many fans to claim that Weatherspoon cared more about Reese’s streak than the overall result for the team.
Weatherspoon responds
When Weatherspoon was asked about how far Reese can take this double-double streak, she said: “It’s all up to Angel. The work that she puts in… she goes hard. “She’s not out there for [double-double] records,” Weatherspoon added. “[Reese is] out there for wins…It just so happens that every time you take a look at the stat sheet, there she is again with a double-double.” Clearly, Weatherspoon wanted to make a point that she is never going to try and influence the personal records of players, her job is to make sure that the team gets the results it needs to move up the rankings.
