U.S. women’s basketball storms through group stage to claim top seed in Paris

The U.S. women’s basketball team came to the Paris Olympics, conquered its group and saw its path to an eighth straight Olympic gold medal come into focus.
After absorbing a hot shooting start from Germany, the United States ramped up its defensive intensity shortly before halftime en route to an 87-68 victory Sunday in its third and final group stage game at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. With the blowout victory, the Americans (3-0) topped Group C and compiled a plus-58 point differential, earning the top seed entering the quarterfinals. They will play Nigeria, which became the first African team to make it that far in the Olympic tournament.
